Atlayo felt one with the moor, like a weaving breeze dancing between the sharp blades of wheat and grass—no longer a corporeal and palpable form. The heaviness that came with existence, the discomfort wedged into every ligament of flesh and bone, dissipated like the air of a soft exhale. A moment there, the unknowing of himself, was freedom like nothing until now. Meditations, Atlayo recalled from the fringes of his memory, packaged a well-time kill in the span of a few heartbeats. Become one with the wind, the sky, the earth, and that beyond—the kill will present itself if your will withstands through "thought-mire" and a fluttering gut.

The grass parted, Atlayo moving like a garden snake in between twigs and leaves, the mud caked on his fur sent a shiver down his spine—a thing that shouldn't be usual, but is. Meditations, Atlayo now realized, was bullshit made up by his parents. Atlayo already knew how to integrate himself between the lines of the know and not knowing: simply, do not think. Atlayo's sister could go on and on about Meditations, but it meant nothing—her whiny voice only fortified how pointless understanding Meditations was. She put too much thought into it, when it was suppose to be as reflexive as blinking. Stop thinking, it fit him nicely like a well-worn pair of boots; for his sister, it was too big a girdle.

Mismatched eyes tracked another form grazing on the meadow grass. Its hooves bore its enormous weight, and thick skin spilled out every which way; it looked like a tied up pineapple. From his vantage point, he could tell it was an elder cow, which weren't worth as much as young cattle. Atlayo squinted his eyes, trying to remember... who had asked for an old cow? (Who wanted an old cow?) Shit, he forgot their name. And once forgotten, so was the will to continue tracking. Atlayo huffed, rising from his position low on the wet ground—and hightailed it toward the cow. It sullied his good mood, and the only way to get it back was to see its terrified expression as something that looked like a mud pie charged at it.

Thankfully, the cow did just that and Atlayo beamed with satisfaction as it scurried away as fast as its aging hooves could imaginably carry it. He would deal with his disappointed client later.

It was no secret that the fog around Askan's Woods had opened up and revealed a new land for everyone to explore. Tyto certainly had not been ignorant to the word traveling around... he was also not ignorant to the dangers that a whole new world would contain. While he was one for exploring new things and getting all the information that could first hand, he wasn't one to take unnecessary risks. He knew the king had wanted to clear the way first but he wasn't brave enough to head along with that contingent of wolves. No, he would wait a bit to see if he'd be risking life and limb.

Soon enough he'd heard that the king had set up a sort of civilized area that he could hopefully stay at and be relatively safe while he gathered knowledge. With those thoughts in mind, the man began to pack. Parchment paper, empty books, ink. He could contain himself no longer when he heard a small assortment of soldiers would be headed towards the Roadsmeet. It was the perfect opportunity to be escorted there in relative safety. So, after shutting down the library for a few days he would head out with these soldiers. All of the books about the outside of their well-explored land were scarce and the information vague and useless... but now he had the chance to write things down first-hand and to really be a pioneer! Ah, he couldn't wait! It was a daunting and terrifying task but he was ready.

---

Traveling with the soldiers he was able to make it to the Roadsmeet and set up his own little area with a few books and his other assorted supplies. He knew what he wanted to do though and took some writing utensils so that he could head towards the moorlands. There were so many new things to write about and catalogue! Every so often he and Alba would stop to write things down and with her crude claw-ink-writing she would scribble in sketches and hastily written words. They would make things pretty later. A proper primate familiar would be needed to make everything look library book quality.

As they walked along, Alba noted a large rock that would be the perfect vantage point for them to look out from. The cat let out a mrow to get Tyto's attention as they both turned to make their way to the stone. The freckled wolf managed to scramble his way up with their supplies as he settled on top. Only to see some shape on the horizon... Was that... a living creature? He could hardly tell the mossy shape out from the rest of the landscape. Was it moving? Was it a trick of the light? ' I don't see anything... Come, Tyto, we have things to write. I need that memory of yours.' His companion spoke in a clipped manner as she sprawled out their supplies, turning away from the horizon while Tyto blinked uncertainly. Had that been a wolf... or not?

The novelty of watching the bovine scurry away significantly wore off as it merged into the horizon, a light squall finally obscuring any remnant of the animal with dust and long grass. Atlayo stared ahead anyway, head blank, back achy from the mud he caked on for camouflage. He could probably spring for a few more client requests; he knew a particular good place to hunt for foxes, which had become in-fashion for one of the hermit tribes presiding near the lake of mist. Or even a wormy water-rat that some "shaman" wanted for an "omen." Atlayo had been only half-listening as the old shaman described their practice in detail, and exactly why they needed a water-rat; the explanation was completely unprompted, and Atlayo nearly phased out of his skin listening to the old man's elaborate speech.

A movement caught his eye, on the hill from which Atlayo ran. His dead-stare, shark-like eyes found another person there; and the first word that popped into his head upon looking at the them was strawberry. Atlayo squinted, doubt suddenly overwhelming—was it a wolf? A look up and down, grass obscuring the little wolf's legs, and Atlayo confirmed what he began to doubt. Something else moved beside them, a smaller animal that Atlayo swore to be a cat. The mud wolf paused, an idea crossing his mind as inexorable as thunder after lightning. Atlayo could trade one of those for a brass ring, the ones a particularly famous Moorland welder made; from the stories Atlayo heard, the welder used cat guts for a few of his projects.

"Oye," Atlayo called out, following complete whim and the will to steal the feline from its companion. He approached slowly, non-confrontational, and stopped a good distance away from the stranger. Numbers fluttered through his head, close enough to assess the smaller wolf; he wouldn't be worth much, considering his stature, but if he resisted giving up the cat, then Atlayo might as well take the stranger too. He had something on the bridge of his nose, and if Atlayo would have to guess, the stranger was from way north of the Moorlands.

"Eres norteño?" Atlayo kissed his teeth, appearing to size up the man, a picture of open-ended curiosity. "You a northerner?"

"Oye," The small man's head raised, pale eyes squinting uselessly into the distance. That time Alba couldn't deny the voice that she heard and when she sat up to look, her sharper gaze easily pinpointed the creature that stood off away from them. Her keen blue eyes locked onto the strangely colored wolf as she pointed him out to her companion. Even with Alba pointing a paw at him, Tyto still had some difficulty because of the color of the man's fur. It blended it well. Too well. Although as the other came closer and closer, he began to more clearly make out the larger wolf.

Where had he come from? Who was he? He could scent that this creature wasn't of Yaurith, his smell was too wild and too... muted, to be one of the tamed wolves of the capital city. Was he from here? This dangerous new world?! Tyto could feel excitement bubbling up inside him at the prospect of meeting and getting to interview someone from outside of Yaurith. Oh the books he could write! Even Alba was intrigued, her intelligent eyes were locked upon the man as she watched him. Although, even in her own eagerness she was cautious and wary of someone who could be dangerous. "That... that language! What was that language you spoke? Oh my, you must be from here then? What's your name? Where are you from exactly? Do you have family about too? How many wolves live here?" The man, normally a bundle of nerves outside of his establishment had everything melt away in his excitement. He just wanted answers and it wasn't until Alba cleared her throat pointedly did he remember that he had been asked a question first. "Oh, ah, terribly sorry. Yes, I am a northerner. I'm from Yaurith and I've come with the king's band at the Roadsmeet." Okay, not exactly with the king's band but he did arrive with soldiers so close enough.

Now he eagerly awaited the man's responses while Alba readied her claw to write on a new sheet of paper to take notes from thier unsuspecting interviewee.

A little burst of excitement from the foreigner endeared Atlayo to him, like a puppy would to... anyone. Little puppy foreigner and his feline companion regarded the mud wolf in interest, which was a step in the right direction; once their guards significantly weakened, proving to be easier than Atlayo initially supposed, then he could trap them. But the only tribulation, the foreigner had come with others. Now, it was Atlayo's turn to incline his head and listen intently to the other man's words. Yaurith. It was a word previously unfamiliar to him, but now in his head, his tongue, Atlayo repeated the word again and again. Yaurith. Where this peculiar foreigner and his cat arrived from with parchment and a curious glee. Could there be more of him, more naive explorers to fall into Atlayo's wide-stretched maw?

"You come from Yaurith?" A gentle breeze brought the man's scent to him, and Atlayo noted a sweet and placid scent, unnatural in its specificity. Did these foreigners douse themselves in these smells? The foreigner almost smelled delicious. The mud wolf licked his lips, nose, suddenly hungry. "I've never heard of someone from there. And there's more of you? Interesting." He muttered the last word, moving even closer to the man, docile yet no less like a curious pup wanting to investigate. The cat and owner were still on the table in terms of prey, but Atlayo wanted to learn more about the king's band.

"Tell you what." Altayo settled on his haunches, head titled and clear-eyed. "I'll answer any of your questions if you answer some of mine." An innocuous request, Atlayo hoped it served sufficiently as bait.

The cat's blue ice never left the earthen-toned man's face. Intent, suspicious, she wouldn't let her guard down even if her companion was already letting everything tumble in his excitement. "You come from Yaurith?" The other repeated the name as if it were new on his tongue and he was sure it was. They'd always been separated from the other lands. He was sure that Yaurith was nothing but a fairy tale to them. Nay, probably even less. Something that had never even existed! How absolutely fascinating to meet a wolf that was so other and so foreign. It was bizarre. It was intriguing and amazing. Tyto's tail even began to wag a small cadence, a tiny little twitch to one direction then to the other a few seconds later.

None of his questions were answered at first, in fact, Tyto could see the other lick his nose and his lips. Incorrectly, he assumed that it meant the stranger was nervous. Poor thing was probably beside himself from having never met an alien wolf before. Hopefully he wasn't overwhelming the other wolf with all of the questions he had... Not that it mattered! There were things that he had to know. Things that could certainly not wait till he was less bashful.

"Indeed, many more. The king as well as others of my ilk are coming here to help industrialize. This land has lain far too uncultivated for far too long." The man said, his lips twitched and he almost smiled. In either case he certainly sounded dreamy at the idea. That their world would be expanding, that there would be so much more to learn. It was beautiful. He was certain that any of the wolves here wouldn't mind. After all, once they saw the technology and the things that they could do and use. They would almost certainly want a piece of the pie. Who would want to live like savages --assuming that they did-- by choice? Hunting with fangs was nice and all but it was all the more easier when one could utilize a bow and arrow or knife and shield.

"Oh why yes, yes, of course. That only seems fair. Answers for answers." They both would get valuable information in return. Seemed fair enough to him. ' Be careful, hun. I can't put my paw on it but something seems off...' Was Alba's warning in his mind as she stared, cat-like at the mossy man. Tyto watched the other as well but he could hardly see past his excitement. The other wolf was more than trustworthy, right? He'd already agreed to answer questions which he certainly didn't have to do. "Please, ask away, my good sir."
